I have painful, burning/itchy, swollen lumps on my labia. Any idea of what they might be?

Never "inside" the tender flesh, always on the hairy parts. The lumps last a few days and then go away if I can keep from itching them. There appears to be nothing there - no lesions or external bumps, just redness, and there doesn't seem to be anything in the lumps, they are like "proud flesh". I can get up to a handful at once, and then they go away for a few days or weeks and then are back.
I'm pretty sure they aren't a sexual disease - my husband and I have been together for 20 years, and I am fairly certain he isn't cheating on me (as certain as any woman can be).
