How to lose 15 pounds

Posted by Sue R. Registered Dietician

The answer to this question may be easier than you think if you are a soda-drinker, according to what I just read in the Sept. 2007 issue of Tufts University Health & Nutrition Letter.

If you normally consume one regular soda per day, and you cut this out of your daily diet, the calories you save would amount to a 15 pound weight loss in one year!

Sure it won't happen overnight, but what a relatively painless way to go...

BTW...if you are interested in food and health, I'd highly recommend getting a subscription to the Tufts Letter. Post a note or drop me an email and I'd be happy to send you ordering info.

I wish. Try two regular sodas a year!

There are lots of changes you can make that will add up to that type of change, including choosing skim milk in your coffee drink at Starbucks, eating a side salad with your evening meal (don't drown it with dressing), having fruit for a snack once a day instead of a pastry, chips or candy. Just pick one thing and change it. It can make a powerful difference over time.

Hello Sue R.- I would like to subscribe to Tufts Letter, and also how to keep the pounds away for good. Thanks.

Susan,

Its really worth the $28 per year. The Customer Service phone is 1-800-274-7581, www.healthletter.tufts.edu.

Enjoy!

Sue

Of course it's not just soda.

Liquid calories as a whole are easy targets.

Cutting back on juice, milk (yes milk - unless you're a growing child there is actually more evidence to suggest risk from milk consumption than benefit.  For more information on this, head over to Harvard's School of Public Health's webpage and look up the "Healthy Eating Pyramid" where they review some of this data), cream in your coffee, alcohol etc. for many people can easily trim enough calories to lose 15lbs in a year.

Simple rule of thumb - every 10 calories you lose a day for a year adds up to 1lb.

Good luck!
