Breaking News: Santos wins NYC Marathon in 2:08:43

Santos
Back in 2006 Marilson Gomes dos Santos surprised the field with a strong finishing kick that some people discounted as a fluke.

It was no fluke.

Today he proved that it was certainly no fluke by capturing the NYC marathon title over Abderrahim Goumri of Morocco in the final stretch of Central Park South.

According to Universal Sports:

"Unlike the women’s race, which was essentially decided at the start, the men’s race did not unfold until the latter stages.

At the 20-mile point, Gomes dos Santos and Goumri pulled ahead of the rest of the field with the Brazilian looking strong and Goumri appearing to struggle. But Goumri was not hurting as much as it looked and he surged into the lead by about seven meters on the 22nd mile.

Goumri continued to run with determination and opened a five-second lead on Gomes dos Santos at the 30-kilometer mark. He continued to pull away inch by inch, but all the while Gomes dos Santos continued to run steady.

They say things happen fast in the marathon and they indeed fell apart fast for Goumri, who appeared headed to his first major victory when he suddenly hit the wall and began to labor at the 26-mile mark. Sensing Goumri was vulnerable, Gomes dos Santos pounced and was able to pass him with eae on the left side. Goumri, who looked over his right shoulder, never saw him coming."
